Learners suffer direct sun as schools roofs blown off

Learners at Mbale Primary School under Mchere Education Zone in Nsanje are enduring the scorching sun in dilapidated structures they still call schoolblocks- for lack of a better word.

This is happening months after the Tropical Cyclone Gombe blew-off the roofs early this year but authorities have done nothing to correct the life threatening situation.

Headteacher for the institution, Gilbert Sande claims some learners are even shunning classes for fear that the wall or part of the damaged roofs might fall on them.

“It’s a terrible situation as now it is over ten months down the line when Cyclone Gombe blew off the roofs but some learners are still occupying them,” he said.

Sande is now more worried that the situation might worsen with this rainy season and affect the education standards on a bigger scale.

Nsanje District Coordinating Primary Education Advisor (CPEA) Macknowledge Maganizo has confirmed the blowing off of the infrastructures at Mbale School in the district.

He adds the school authorities were instructed to channel the issue through the Area Development Committee (ADC) in the area to take the matter to Nsanje District Council.

“Education Committee of the council through the Development Committee could have used the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) or Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) response programme to rehabilitate the schoolblocks,” says Maganizo. CPEA.

Established in 1995, Mbale Primary School has an enrollment of 623 against 7 teachers.
