Lake Chirwa’s Conservation Advocacy Gains Momentum

The Malawi National Commission for UNESCO is calling upon stakeholders and communities in the vicinity of Lake Chilwa, a designated Man and Biosphere site, to take immediate action in curbing human activities that pose a threat to the natural resources within the site.

David Mlera, the Acting Deputy Executive Secretary of the Commission, emphasized the international significance of Lake Chilwa and its potential to contribute substantially to the country’s economy through tourism. Preserving this natural wonder is paramount.

Mlera delivered this message during an event in Lilongwe where the Malawi National Commission for UNESCO and YONECO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The collaboration between these two institutions aims to raise awareness about the benefits of Lake Chilwa and the pressing need to safeguard it.

James Kalimbuka, the Manager of YONECO radio station, highlighted the potential of this partnership in addressing the challenges that currently jeopardize the Lake’s catchment area. This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward preserving Lake Chilwa’s unique ecosystem.
