An exchange between inquiry chairperson Walter Nyamilandu and witness Winnie Nyondo has drawn public attention during proceedings of the commission investigating the plane crash that claimed the life of former Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima and eight others.
Nyamilandu alleged that Nyondo had posted a message about “too much turbulence” on June 10, 2024, before deleting it. Nyondo disputed the claim, maintaining that the post was made on June 13, 2024, and remains visible on her social media page.
The chairperson subsequently stated that the secretariat would conduct a background check and that further action could be taken if the witness was found to have provided false information under oath.
Some observers have questioned the remarks, arguing that inquiry officials should rely on verified facts and avoid statements that may be perceived as pressuring witnesses.
They also note that Nyondo, being among those most affected by the tragedy, has consistently sought answers regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash.
A copy of the June 13 social media post has been attached for reference.
