Kawale Police Station through Area 24 Police unit on October 13, 2021 has tipped young mothers under Center for Children and youth development (Ceyod) a Community Based Organisation (CBO) in Ngwenya.
The participants have been drilled on entreprenuership and opportunities of returning to school in an effort to reducing Gender based violence (GBV).
The records at Kawale Victim Support Unit (VSU) indicate that many young girls who enter marriages by default after falling prey to unplanned pregnancies, end up becoming victims of gender based violence due to lack of financial and mental independence .
On the eve of mothers’ day celebration, Area 24 Community Policing branch completed the day by drilling mothers who entered matrimonial life at an early stage. The other participants were those abandoned by their husbands and left with a burden to raise their children as single mothers.
The meeting took place at Ceyod offices at Ngwenya in Area 24, aimed at igniting the power and ability within the participants.
Various tips were shared to them in combating common problems faced by those young mothers, such as suicide and GBV.
This task was done as a prelude celebration on mother’s day annual event set for this coming Friday, October 15, 2021.
Speaking during the gathering, Area 24 Police Community Policing Co-ordinator, Sub-inspector Esnart Chikapa challenged the young mothers that there is still an opportunity for them to achieve their desire in life through education or businesses.
“Refrain from being idle, do business or go back to school. Some of you will still make it in life but what you need is hardwork and determination” emphasized Chikapa.
Furthermore Chikapa advised the young mothers to report to police any GBV. She advised them to never fall victim to any form of abuse and remain silent because the office of Police is open for everyone to ensure that they are assisted accordingly.
Alex Kalulu, Ceyod director was grateful for the timely visit by Police to his CBO citing that the tips shared will help the young mother’s to make rightful decisions.
“This meeting has been an eye opener to the young mothers to engage in businesses in order to become self reliant” concluded Mr Kalulu.
