On Sunday, July 7th, 2024, thousands of people gathered at Kautamba Ground for the GVH Mtengo Waminga finals. The event saw Wire FC crowned as champions after defeating Mudyaka FC by a goal to nil.
This football league is organized by family members to honor their forefathers. The atmosphere was filled with joy and celebration as Wire FC took the championship.
Rev. Nelson Longwe, representing TA Kambunduli, expressed his delight with the initiative. He highlighted that it provides an excellent opportunity for the youth to showcase their skills.
George Kanjala, the chairperson of the organizing committee, also praised the league. He described it as a valuable platform for young players to demonstrate their abilities.
Mercy Kaunda, the shadow MP for AFORD in the Nkhata-Bay West constituency, suggested that the Football Association of Malawi should get involved. She believes they could scout for talent in leagues like the GVH Mtengo Waminga Trophy.
The league was sponsored with K1 million. The champions, Wire FC, received K300 thousand, while the runners-up, Mudyaka FC, walked away with K200 thousand.
Such events are crucial for community engagement and youth development. They not only honor traditions but also help in identifying and nurturing football talent.
The success of this year’s league has set a positive precedent for future tournaments, encouraging more participation and support.
