GOVERNMENT U-TURNS ON TEACHERS PPE’S ALLOWANCES

Malawi government has today written TUM through parliamentary committee on education…notifying the teachers that the government does not have the intention of giving teachers PPE allowances as it had promised.

We understands that this is also the reason why Dakamau the former PS for education was removed from the ministry…for agreeing to give teachers allowances.

The Teachers Union of Malawi has therefore announced that teachers in public learning institutions will resume their nationwide strike.

It follows government’s response through a letter from the Parliamentary Committee on Education, which turns down their demands.

The letter indicates that the Presidential Taskforce on Covid 19 doesn’t support the resolution of providing teachers with the appropriate cash equivalent to Personal Protective Equipment for a period of 3 months.

In a statement signed by the President of TUM Willie Malimba, the teachers have given a 7 day notice of their intention to resume the industrial action which was suspended as a following an agreement with the authorities on 8th March 2021.
