Government to Review K28 Billion Marka-Bangula Railway Project Amid Cyclone Impact

In a recent development, the government has announced its intention to conduct a comprehensive review of the K28 billion Marka-Bangula railway rehabilitation and upgrading project to account for additional costs. This decision comes in the wake of Cyclone Freddy, which has necessitated adjustments to the project’s scope.

Madalo Nyambose, the Principal Secretary responsible for administration within the Ministry of Transport and Public Infrastructure, has confirmed that the project contractor has submitted a revised scope of work in response to the challenges posed by Cyclone Freddy. The extent of the impact caused by the cyclone on the project’s timeline and requirements prompted this crucial review.

To gain firsthand insights into the project’s progress, the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Public Works conducted a site visit today. During this visit, Nyambose revealed that the physical progress of the project currently stands at 22 percent.

CR-20 Technical and Business Development Manager, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, expressed optimism about the project’s timeline, stating that, given favorable conditions, the work is expected to reach completion by December 2024. The government’s commitment to addressing the project’s evolving needs underscores the significance of this critical transportation initiative.
