Government of Malawi has requested the European Union (EU) to consider resumption of direct budgetary support that ceased seven years ago.
The request was made this week during an Article 8: Political Dialogue between the EU and Malawi Government at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Lilongwe.
In 2014, EU and other western financial institutions and bilateral donors suspended direct aid to Malawi over widespread concerns of massive theft of public funds dubbed “cash gate.”
Chargè d’Affaires of the EU delegation to Malawi, Aurelie Valtat said after the dialogue, they discussed budgetary support and had, therefore, reactivated a road map that would determine the way forward.
Valtat underscored the importance of implementing the reformative agenda, which will show government’s commitment to developing the nation.
