EXPLORING NEW MARKETS: COOPERATIVES OPTIMISTIC AT AGRICULTURE FAIR

The ongoing Agriculture Fair in Blantyre has become a beacon of hope for various cooperatives participating in the Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) program. These cooperatives are eager to tap into fresh markets for their products through this three-day agricultural exhibition event that commenced today. The fair has attracted smallholder farmers, commercial growers, and agricultural traders from all corners of the country.

Diverse cooperatives hailing from different regions have congregated to showcase an array of products, ranging from pure natural honey and cooking oil to powdered milk, yogurt, and soybean derivatives. The Kabunduli Cooperative, consisting of 200 members, stands as a testament to the enthusiasm among these groups. Mercy Deuka, a member of the cooperative, expressed her excitement about the event and the potential gains they envision, especially in regard to their honey production.

Linda Magombo Munthali, the Agribusiness and Value Chain Specialist for the TRADE program, shed light on their primary objective—to foster self-reliance among smallholder farmers, extending from individual households to a national level. Munthali emphasized the importance of local farmers embracing nutritional enhancement and value addition in their products to maximize profits. An exemplar of this concept lies in the transformation from sunflower cultivation to the production of cooking oil.

As cooperatives come together with optimism and determination, the Agriculture Fair stands not only as a platform for showcasing products but also as a testament to the potential of agricultural diversification and entrepreneurship. The event serves as a pivotal step towards bolstering the agricultural sector, fostering growth, and empowering local communities to thrive through innovation and value addition.
