Chapananga bridge which opened in 2017 has survived two rain falls and the Roads Authority is working to protect the bridge from persistent flooding and cyclones which could reduce its lifespan , contractors on the site have disclosed.
Social Media has been awash with images of works being undertaken by the RA to protect the bridge and many have assumed there has been Damage to the road or bridge resulting in quickly blaming the contractor PLEM for the mess.

” A cyclone hit the bridge area in 2018 and as expected caused some movements of the banks and soil near the bridge. Bua consultants and Roads Authority contracted the company to place 25,000 sand bags to protect the area from water hits” , explained the Engineer at the site .
He said the works are remedial works contracted only in September 2020 and are expected to be completed within the next few days.

” Malawians can be assured of the quality of the bridge , despite the 2018 hits , nothing happened to the Bridge. It is as intact as the day it was handed over . That’s PLEM quality. ” He boasted.
Avantmalawi has it that PLEM construction company is also involved in the biggest irrigation/borehole scandal in Mangochi.

It is alleged the construction company received Millions in Us dollars to erect the bridge which has not even lasted a year.
And it is owned by a Malawian of Asian Origin
Who was behind awarding contracts to PLEM? Will the Ministry of Roads look unto this with a third eye?
