‘My dream is to learn and find a good job to assist my divorced mother and siblings who are starving in the village,’ says Mercy Bwanali, a determined 19-year-old from Chatata village, Dedza district, Malawi. A first year student pursuing higher education against all odds at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) City campus, where she’s studying Bachelors of Agriculture Extension.
“My journey hasn’t been easy. I am surviving on a friend I have met here for meals, and I promised to pay the landlord once I get assistance, yes I have filled the loan forms but I was told point blank that it is not an automatic thing only luck ones benefit.” Mercy shares. Despite financial constraints, she commenced classes on August 21, 2023, armed with minimal resources and a heart full of determination. She’s going the extra mile, seeking wage labor and loans to cover her academic expenses.
Mercy’s aspirations extend beyond her own achievements. ‘I cry and pray every day when I see my poverty overtaking my future,’ she adds. Her dream to uplift her family and community underscores the transformative power of education.
