MAYAYA REPORTS INDIAN INVESTOR TO ACB

Billy Mayaya Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) executive member has reported an Indian investor Chandra Shekhar More to the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for attempts to bribe Richard Chimwendo Banda Minister of Homeland Security, HRDC discloses in a statement.

More is heard in audios that have gone viral expressing intent to bribe Banda and Mayaya to the tune of K60 million as a ‘thank you’ to be cleared and return to Malawi.

Mayaya adds that he has forwarded recordings of the conversation with More to ACB as evidence of the investor’s corrupt intentions.

“He called me but I pretended to be with the minister although I was alone. He offered a payment of K60 million for a reversal of his immigration status,” said Mayaya.

The Indian investor who set up an edible oils extraction plant in the country was deported in 2017 for tax evasion charges.

Reyneck Matemba ACB’s director general has confirmed receiving Mayaya’s complaint saying, “we have filed it and we will investigate the matter.”

Local press has quoted Homeland Security Minister saying he was aware of the issue.

“I was alerted about the development through a phone call from Mayaya. I am pleased that he reported the matter to ACB,” said Banda.

As a way of trying to bribe his return to the country More is on record to have threatened to file a public interest litigation to stop the Indian Government from helping Malawi with loans and suspend trade, especially on legumes.

More has been in the media on several occasions including his slurs on police officers for questioning him when he tried to bribe Malawi Revenue Authority officers.

When More’s bribery issues emerged on social media many have suggested that such personalities are a bad influence to society and need no mercy.

The Tonse Administration has repeatedly said it will not tolerate any corrupt acts which have derailed the development of the country. –
