BUSINESS TRADERS VOW TO PROTESTS AGAINST CLOSURE OF WAKAWAKA MARKET

Hours after government suspended school opening on 2nd January 2023, today the 3rd day, Lilongwe City Council has moved in ordering temporal suspension of business at Wakawaka Market in Lilongwe the capital city of Malawi.

The closure comes after an assessment report of poor sanitation at the market. Lilongwe City Mayor, Richard Banda explained that the closure comes to mitigate risk of the Cholera disease being spread in the city.

However, alot of business traders have expressed concerns with the move. “It is ill-timing to close business at Wakawaka market, since is is a hub to fresh food products from various districts to Lilongwe. The government should have just educated traders on the said measures they should put in place in fighting cholera rather closing the market ” one of the business guru at Wakawaka’s remarks.

Wakawaka market is located kilometres from the main Business unit of Lilongwe which provides an opportunity to various sellers to trade their commodities direct from fields.
