The Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) has shown its continued commitment to the development of sports in the country through hiring of women’s football team yesterday. This was confirmed when it unveiled Silver Strikers Ladies Football team in the capital Lilongwe.
The Bank underwrites Silver Strikers Company Limited which under it has Silver Strikers senior mens team, Silver Strikers Reserve as well as Silver Strikers Youth and lately included the womens team.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held in Lilongwe on Friday evening, RBM Executive Director (Corporate Services) Mercy Kumbatira with all gratitude said the bank is commited to seeing football developing in the country and they at RBM look forward to make sure the four teams are well taken care of. She also said that as RBM they feel duty-bound to take part in developing the game in the country.
“We are very happy to have a new kid on the block and I should assure the nation that we are up for the task to make sure that the four teams thrive and mark their existence in football books in the country. With the ladies team, we expect it to do well and bring back silverwares”, Kumbatira added.
On the other end, Silver Strikers Company Limited Board Chair Dr George Kaudza Masina said the unveiling of the ladies team is a dream come true. Masina agreed with Kumbatira on the move by saying that the gesture is not the only way of meeting the club licencing requirements to have the ladies team but commitment to develop sports in the country.
Early this year, FAM made it mandatory for topflight team’s to own women’s football teams following a resolution by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“The announcement by FAM on the requirement to have a women’s side to fulfill Club Licensing procedures was a motivation to the dream that we have had all along. Now that we have launched the Ladies team we are very excited. We look forward to taking this team to greater heights”, Masina explained.
The team was in March this year.
