MALAWI BEAT FIJI, FACE TOP RANKED AUSTRALIA TOMORROW

Malawi the Queens have started the second round of the ongoing World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa with a 62 – 48 win against 19th ranked Fiji in a game where shooter Mwai Kumwenda emerged player of the match.

The next game for Malawi is against the world’s number one ranked side Australia from 11 o’clock in the morning tomorrow. Thereafter, the 6th ranked Queens will wait until Thursday to face 7th placed Tonga from 6 o’clock in the evening.

In the first round, 16 teams were split into four groups; A, B, C and D. Each group comprised four teams. In the current stage, the 16 teams have been split into three groups F, G and E.

Top three teams from groups A and B are in group F comprising England, Malawi, Scotland, Australia, Tonga and Fiji. Best three teams from groups C and D are in group G comprising defending champions New Zealand, Jamaica, Uganda, South Africa, Wales and Trinidad and Tobago.

Group E has four teams who finished bottom of groups A, B, C and D. The teams are Zimbabwe, Barbados, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Top two sides from groups F and G will qualify for the semi – finals in a war for gold and silver with the rest battling for final placings from positions 5 to 16.

The tournament which is held every four years started on Friday July 28 and is expected to end on Sunday 6th August.
