LIKOMA CRIES FOR SLOW BUSINESS DUE TO ABSENCE OF BANKS

People of Likoma are expressing concern over the absence of banking facilities on the island.

They say the situation cripples economic growth in the district as tourists and business gurus fail to utilize their money once they visit the island.

Since Likoma was declared a district a decade ago, it has never had formal banking services despite several appeals, forcing people to keep money in homes.

Chairperson for Likoma District Council Ernest Gulu believes banking facilities would help to create economic opportunities for the district.

Gulu told our reporters that public employees and the business community sail to the mainland to access banking services.

He indicated that the absence of banking facilities has contributed to a rise in house breaking cases as criminals know that money is kept in homes.
