CHINGENI TOLL PLAZA OFFICIALLY OPENED

The Chingeni toll plaza has officially been opened today in Ntcheu District. The opening of the plaza comes after some disputes between Malawi Government and Minibus operators on Monday November 8, 2021.

The minibus owners staged a stay away in some cities on Monday morning to express discomfort with the toll gate fee they are to pay at the plaza when passing through it which they claim is too high.

Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (Moam) secretary General Coaxley Kamanga later annonced the call off of the stay away.

Avant Malawi after a visit in Ntcheu where a Sososo Bus was blocked, some minibus operators expressed discomfort in paying a minimum of K3,400 per passing through the Chingeni toll Plaza.

Despite the stay away, motorists in the country have today started paying toll fees to access the M1 road past Chingeni.

Motorists passing through the gate have since started paying a minimum of K1,700 and a maximum of K20,000 depending on respective load axle aspects.

Speaking to Avant malawi Roads Fund Administration (RFA) Spokesperson, Masauko Ngwaluko, reveals that so far there has been adherence and they did not encounter any case of resistance on the first day.

Over K4bn is expected to be collected annually, with funds strictly channeled towards road maintenance and construction.

Apart from the Chingeni toll plaza, the second one will be opened at Kalinyeke in Dedza district, both of which are on the M1 road.
