VACCINATION REQUIREMENT EXTENDED TO MEC TEMPORARY STAFF

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced today that it has extended the requirement for COVID-19 vaccination to temporary or seconded staff who will be engaged by the Commission ahead of the by-elections and review of constituency and ward boundaries exercise.

Based on the statement signed by the Acting Chief Elections Officer for the electoral body, Harris Potani, this has been arrived at as one of the COVID-19 mitigation measures that is put in place by the Commission considering that there will be movement of staff from place to place.

The statement says all staff and various officials engaged by the Commission will be asked to provide evidence of taking COVID-19 vaccination at the time of engagement.

MEC engages temporary and seconded staff in its operation of some activies. These include, Presiding Officers ,Registration Officers, Polling Stations Operations Officers, Drivers, Officers from the Malawi Police Service and Retuning Officers.

Recently, MEC directed its full time unvaccinated staff members to be operating from home until they access the vaccine.
