Police in Chitipa are keeping in custody 7 men and 1 female vendors for buying farm produce without license and weighing scales.
Chitipa Police Station Deputy Spokesperson Hope Nyalinyali said the eight were arrested during police daily general patrols at Kapoka and Zambwe markets.
“The vendors were buying maize and sunflower using a 20 litre plastic pail at a price of K1500 instead of using certified scales and a minimum price of K150 per kilogram for maize and K240 per kilogram for sunflower,” he said.
The eight are Howokire Kuyokwa, Weekly Mwalembe, Zakaliya Mgala, Msuku Nyondo, Derick Kita, James Silumbu and Owen Kayange who hail from Traditional Authority Mwaulambya in Chitipa district.
Nyalinyali said the vendors will soon appear in court to answer chargers of buying farm produce without licence contrary to Regulation 3 of Agriculture Act and buying produce without license contrary to section 29, Cap 48:04 of laws of Malawi.
Police in Chitipa are appealing to all farm produce buyers to comply with government regulations.
