Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa has urged the Tonse Alliance to deliver its campaign promises as Malawians are eagerly waiting for their implementation.
Nankhumwa made the remarks in the National Assembly when he responded to the State of the National Address (SONA) delivered by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera on 12 May, 2021.
Nankhumwa said the Tonse Alliance ought to be held accountable based on what it promised Malawians prior to its ascendancy to power.
He said: “Among a litany of the promises, the youths were promised 1 million jobs within the first 12 months, paying the elderly monthly grants and K70 million loan basket under the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF).”
Nankhumwa however applauded the President’s efforts earmarked to develop the country in the next four years.
“Chakwera gave a profile of what his Government intends to do through four thematic areas; achieving permanent food security for all Malawians, creating jobs for the youth and creating wealth for Malawians so that they are primary beneficiaries of any economic activity.
“I would like to applaud these efforts that Chakwera is investing to take this country to that destiny,” said Nankhumwa.
He then asked fellow parliamentarians to contribute funds towards Paul Banda’s medical treatment abroad.
The legislators will debate the SONA for two weeks before the Minister of Finance, Felix Mlusu, delivers the 2021/2022 National Budget.
