Ivory traffickers on run

The police in Mzuzu are hunting for suspected ivory traffickers after shooting and injuring one of them around Dunduzu area.

This shooting incident on Monday night follows another incident a day before, where 2 police officers allegedly killed a person during a fracas in the city.

The person died of gun wounds after the police shot him in trying to disperse a crowd following a fracas that ensued at night.

And in the latest incident, 39-year-old George Munthali from Chikalamba village in Rumphi district was shot at a check point.

According to the police, Munthali, a taxi driver was accidentally shot while trying to stop his vehicle.

The police were tipped that the vehicle Munthali was driving was carrying ivory.

Mzuzu Police Deputy Publicist Paul Tembo explains that Munthali was then arrested and is currently admitted to hospital.

The other people that were in the car, jumped out and fled into bushes near the road.
