Malawians deported back from South Africa

27 Malawians who reportedly left the country six months ago heading to South Africa using unchartered routes, have been deported back after being arrested in Harare.

Mwanza Border Immigration Public Relations Officer, Pasqually Zulu, says the group, comprising of 24 men and three women, upon arrival at the border, told authorities that they had left using unchartered routes between Dedza and Ntcheu without any travel documents.

Most of the deportees are from Mangochi, Balaka and Machinga districts.

“No proper documentation and use of unchartered routes by Malawian nationals remains a big challenge to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services despite the department’s efforts in bringing its services closer to people,” Zulu said.

Their trip back home was funded by International Organisation for Migration (I.O.M).
