Teachers across the country are anxiously waiting to hear the resolutions made from the high ranked meeting so far between the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) and President Lazarus Chakwera over the ongoing teachers strike.
Isn’t a secret anymore teachers in the country are boycotting work demanding provision of risks allowances from the Covid fund which has brought alot of talks, suspensions, arrests and interdictions among top government officials including PS and DCs.
Unlike any other discussion, Teacher’s have high expectations from the meeting TUM is having with Dr Lazarus Chakwera to bear positive outcomes. The discussions started way back in August 2020 but the government side was paying dilly-dully tactics regarding teachers as low risky to Covid19 despite President Lazarus Chakwera challenging in Parliament that opposition (Dpp) must leave the teachers welfare in his hands as DPP has already failed on that.
Our reporters managed to talk to some of the concerned Teacher’s, who believes the Tonse alliance has a listening ear. “Unlike any other Regime, we have had sit inn’s or and protests but to no avail. After TUM sat on a round table with the government side we were convinced to return to our work stations, nothing changes.” He adds, “we have dying hope that this meeting will be fruitful”
The current strike comes in barely days after the Presidential task force on Covid19 demanded schools to open after a five weeks break.
