The Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has dismissed claims that tap water supplied in Mzuzu is unsafe for human consumption, assuring residents that the water meets the required drinking water standards.
In a public clarification, the Board said all water supplied to customers undergoes treatment and regular quality testing before distribution.
NRWB has also said that it uses certified treatment chemicals, adding that every consignment is checked upon delivery and any chemicals that fail to meet the required standards are rejected.

The Board has further said that records of water quality tests are maintained and can be made available for independent verification. It has also expressed readiness to facilitate further testing by relevant authorities or competent institutions.
NRWB has since urged councillors and other public leaders to consult technical authorities before making public statements on water quality, saying unverified claims could unnecessarily raise concerns among residents.
Meanwhile, the Board has challenged the councillor behind the allegations to provide test results or other credible evidence to support the claims.
