The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged members of the Nyika Media Club in the Northern Region to ensure accuracy in their reporting on the upcoming elections. The call comes as the nation prepares for the polls scheduled for 16 September 2025.
MEC Public Relations Officer, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, made the appeal during a media engagement session held with Nyika Media Club members on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, at Chitonda Lodge. He stressed the crucial role the media plays in shaping public opinion and ensuring that voters receive credible and factual information.

Mwafulirwa explained that, with the introduction of new systems for the forthcoming elections, it was important to equip journalists with accurate knowledge of the process. He said such engagements would help journalists pass on correct and verified details to the public, thereby fostering transparency and trust in the electoral process.
He noted that misinformation during an election period can mislead the electorate and undermine the credibility of the polls. According to Mwafulirwa, MEC is committed to working closely with journalists to ensure that citizens receive information that is both timely and correct.
On his part, Nyika Media Club Chairperson, Feston Malekezo, urged journalists to remain on high alert as the elections draw near. He said media professionals must be cautious in their reporting, ensuring that all information is verified before it is shared with the public.

Malekezo emphasized that accurate reporting would enable Malawians to make informed decisions when voting. He added that elections should be decided based on facts, not rumours or unverified claims, and called on journalists to uphold professionalism and integrity throughout the electoral period.
