Police in Mangochi have arrested two teenagers on allegations of breaking into a shop within the township on the night of August 20, 2024, and stealing assorted items worth half a million kwacha.
The suspects have been identified as Rashid Mailosi, 18, and Paul Edward, 19.
According to police records, both suspects have criminal histories, having started stealing at the tender age of 10. Their cases have been diverted several times by the police after they were caught stealing from various people within the township.
In 2022, police rescued the first suspect from an angry mob that attempted to burn him alive after he was caught red-handed in the house of a local businessman.
It is alleged that on the night in question, the duo broke into a certain shop and stole three fans, two cooler boxes, and two traveling bags. The two were spotted by security guards in the area as they were fleeing, prompting the guards to mobilize, apprehend the suspects, and inform the police.
The same night, police recovered all the stolen items.
The suspects have been charged with breaking into building and committing a felony therein, which contravenes Section 311 of the Penal Code. They will appear in court after the completion of the necessary paperwork.
Mailosi hails from Sabibu Village, Traditional Authority Nkoola in Machinga, while Edward comes from Mtalimanja Village, Traditional Authority Mapira in Mangochi.
