The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) officially suggests George Chaponda, the newly appointed DPP Vice President for the South, as the replacement for Kondwani Nankhumwa as the leader of the opposition.
DPP spokesperson Shadric Namalomba explains that Nankhumwa’s expulsion has created a vacancy in his position, leading to this proposal.
Namalomba also announces the appointment of Jappie Mhango as DPP chief whip, with Mary Navicha as deputy, taking over from Julius Mwase and Victoria Kingston Mangochi Central Legislator, respectively.
Legal expert Bernadetta Malunga from the University of Malawi supports the DPP’s position, stating that Nankhumwa ceases to be the leader of the opposition unless he challenges his expulsion in court.
As of now, Nankhumwa has not provided any comment on the matter.
