Mangochi Police Station reports decline in sexual offences

Mangochi Police Station have registered a decline in sexual offences during the first quarter of 2023, showcasing positive progress in their crime prevention efforts. 

According to the station’s quarterly crime report(January to March), cases of defilement have decreased from 20 in 2022 to 12 in the same period this year while rape cases have abated from five in 2022 to nil this year.

Police findings attribute this decline to the station’s intensified efforts in promoting community engagement. Despite challenges posed by heavy rainfall and limited mobility resources, the police have been successful in reducing sexual offences through targeted initiatives such as mobile courts, safe schools programme and placement of complaint boxes in various primary schools in the district.

The station has also been actively involved in recovering stolen items, apprehending criminals and ensuring that perpetrators face the full extent of the law with stiff penalties and jail terms. So far, out of 437 criminal cases recorded in the first quarter of 2023, 195 cases have been completed in court and 159 perpetrators are serving their sentences, reinforcing the police’s commitment to combatting crime.

Furthermore, the police have been working closely with community policing forums and members of the public, fostering joint patrols and encouraging increased informant participation. The station acknowledges the support of stakeholders and the general public in their ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in the district.

The station has also reduced road accidents in the district from 34 resulting into 10 fatalities in the first quarter of 2022 to 24 road accidents whereby 6 people lost their lives in the same period this year.

The police are determined to continue their efforts in enhancing road safety awareness and preventing crime. Mangochi Police Station is dedicated to maintaining the downward trend in sexual offences and promoting a safe and secure environment for the community’s social and economic development.
