Man arrested for killing friend over money embezzlement

Police at Lumbadzi in Lilongwe have arrested a 30-year-old man, Edson Nyalavu, on suspicion that he killed his 23-year-old friend over money embezzlement.

The deceased, who has been identified as Yerusalemu Kalupsa from Chitsulo Village in Traditional Authority Mwansambo in Nkhotakota District met his fate between the night of August 7 to August 8 2022 at Lumbadzi Trading Centre.

Sister to the deceased, Gezira told police that Nyalavu together with his accomplicies assaulted his brother, Yerusalemu to death on allegation that he unauthorizedly used money amounting to K40,000.00 from Nyalavu’s customer which was meant for the payment of welding services.

In reaction to this, it is reported that the suspect hired some men to look for the whereabouts of Yerusalemu to recover the money until they found him boozing at a certain pub where they arrested and heavily assaulted him until he became unconscious.

The matter was reported to Lumbadzi Police Station where medical forms were issued to Yerusalemu and referred him to Chinkhuti Health Centre where he died while receiving treatment.

The dead body is at Kamuzu Central Hospital pending postmortem.

Nyalavu will appear before the court soon to answer the charge of murder contrary to Section 209 of the Penal Code and more arrests are expected as police investigations are underway.

Nyalavu comes from James Village in Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District.

Meanwhile, Police at Lumbadzi condemn acts of taking laws into own hands as it is criminal and punishable by law.
