MINIBUS OPERATORS FIGHTS POLICE OVER SEATING CAPACITY

LIVE: Running battles are being reported in some parts of Blantyre, Lilongwe and Zomba as minibus operators are demonstrating against failure by government to reduce fuel prices and to a reduction in seating capacity.

For instance, police have had to use teargas to disperse people in Chirimba (Malandilova stage) after they blocked the road and stopped other cars from carrying passengers that are crowded in depots. Same scenario has been witnessed at chinamwali, zomba. Where teargas has lost direction into people’s houses.

The minibus operators are demanding government to reduce fuel prices because the seating capacity was reduced to 60% as part of Covid19 preventive measures.

So far, passengers of public commutters are left stranded in most areas as the minibus operators are threatening others who intend to go back to the roads.

A plea to Homeland security, may you find better ways of resolving conflicts peacefully. Teargas may not only be the primary action to disperse people
