It never rains but pours on the government as days are turning into months. The government of Malawi through the ministry of health is failing to honour the determination made by the office of the ombudsman under the direction of Martha Chizuma. The ministry of health was directed to pay off benefits to the Health Surveillance Assistants (HSA) deployed in government under the global fund.
The government of Malawi employed over 5000 HSAs under the global fund in 2007 but the funding phased out in 2010 which forced the same government to incorporate them into its workers pool. From 2010 through 2015 their salaries were treamed to suit that of their friends, no terminal benefits were given to their families in case of death and more sorts of ill-treatments.
In 2015 the same government released a vacancy which saw the whole chunk passing the aptitude test given but to their surprise only a few were given letters of appointment leaving out the others despite passing the test.
The government of Malawi failed to explain the good reasons for the torture and failure to meet their demands which prompted them to seek guidance and assistance in the office of ombudsman which released final determination upon reviewing all the hardships our health workers went through. In her determination the Ombudsman faulted the government’s conduct and directed the ministry of health to pay off all the terminal benefits by the end of business on 28th February, 2021.
Avantmalawi can confirm that the deadline has passed but the beneficiaries are yet to get their dues. When the office of the ombudsman was contacted to check for further action since the government has failed to honour its determination to our surprise the office only advised them to wait till the end of the month of March.
Avantmalawi as a media house edges the concerned party in question herein referred to as the government of Malawi through the ministry of health to honour the determination of the ombudsman and stop playing such silly tricks to its workers for better service delivery. Avantmalawi would also like to suggest that such kind of issues affect negatively the quality of service delivery in government. The issue of teachers is at hand and today we are adding up this other one of Health Surveillance Assistant. The government should be so clever in the way it conducts its business, pay the concerned as early as possible and hold hands in the fight against Covid-19 since these are the same people the country is laying its hopes to administer the just arrived Covid-19 vaccine.
