Sergeant Chawanangwa Mkandawire, a police officer has been killed in Zomba when the men in uniform were in a process of rescuing money from a plot of a money heist by robbers.

Eastern Region Police Public Relations Officer Joseph Sauka confirmed the incident to avantmalawi

The police publicist said the police received a tip that some robbers were planning to hijack and rob a van which was carrying money to pay Gibs security guards who are work at Chancellor College.

A team of 9 police officers from Criminal Investigations Department (CID) were deployed on the ground to follow up the tip.

As planned the robbers blocked the van which was carrying the cash which prompted the officers to start firing shots at the armed robbers.

According to Sauka, one shot from a police officer accidentally landed on Mkandawire (a fellow officer), he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Zomba Central Hospital.

The men in uniform managed to arrest the five suspected armed robbers who masterminded the Heist.
