THE LILONGWE BASED DEFILER BACK IN COURT

Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa has started hearing a defilement case of a Lilongwe based businessman Stuart Kalungama.

Kalungama is being suspected to have defiled his 9 year old daughter. He has since pleaded not guilty.

A group of concerned women has converged at the Lilongwe high court premises, chanting songs, in solidarity with a 9 year old girl who was allegedly defiled by his 37 year old step-Father. The suspect, Stewart Kalungama of Chimanazo village traditional Authority Chiseka, Lilongwe is appearing before court answering charges of rape and defilement

Speaking before Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa, the defence says the court should adjourn the case as the accused is sick.

They say Kalungama has been unwell since Saturday but he has never been taken to hospital.

However, the State says the claims are being made to delay the case.

The State argues that if the accused was really sick, officers from Maula Prison would have formally reported to them and he could have been taken to hospital.

Further to that, they point out that adjourning the case will be costly to the State as today they have already brought in a doctor from Kamuzu Central Hospital as one of the witnesses.
