Son arrested for killing father over land dispute in Mangochi

Police in Mangochi have arrested a 40-year-old ,Milambo Umali, for allegedly assaulting to death his biological father with a hoe handle following a land dispute.

The incident occurred on October 25, 2025, at Ndembo Village, Traditional Authority Chimwala, in Mangochi District.

Reports indicate that the two picked a quarrel after the father (now deceased) objected to his son’s decision to lend part of his land to someone else for cultivation.

The argument escalated, prompting the suspect to assault his father multiple times with a hoe handle on the left side of his body. The victim later complained of weakness and was rushed to Mtima Bi Health Centre, where he was treated as an outpatient.

However, his condition worsened the following day, and he was referred to Mangochi District Hospital, where death was confirmed upon arrival.

A postmortem examination revealed that death was due to internal injuries. Meanwhile, Umali has been charged with murder, and will appear in court once the necessary paperwork is completed.

Police in Mangochi are appealing to the public to opt for amicable ways of settling their differences to avoid committing such serious crimes.

Umali hails from Gwaza village, Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.
