PRESIDENTIAL AIDE ARRESTED OVER SMUGGLED BILL

Investigations by the Malawi Police Services (MPS) into how Bill number 22 of 2021 Loan Authorisation found itself on the Parliamentary Order Paper have led to the arrest of Pastor Martin Thom, who is a Presidential Advisor to President Dr Lazarus Chakwera.

On Monday, The Nation newspaper investigative report revealed that the bill, which was seeking to allow Government to borrow €98 360 000 ( K93 billion) to finance the construction of houses for security agencies such as Malawi Police Service and Malawi Defence Force (MDF), was smuggled into Parliament for debate without the approval of Cabinet, Ministry of Justice and Attorney General.

State House Director of Communications, Sean Kampondeni, has confirmed the development to the media saying the arrest is part of the investigations by the Police

On Monday, during the State House Weekly Brief, Kampondeni indicated the President was probing the matter
