PARLIAMENT RECOGNIZES NANKHUMWA AS LEADER OF OPPOSITION

In a dramatic twist of events, just barely hours after the 22 Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members of Parliament obtained a stay order at High Court sitting in Lilongwe restraining George Chaponda from acting as leader of opposition(Lop), Parliament has recognized Nankhumwa as the leader of opposition.

According to a letter dated 28 June 2022, signed by Clerk of Parliament Fiona Kalemba and addressed to Kondwani Nankhumwa that we have seen, the Parliament has since invited Nankhumwa to a Business Committee meeting which is being held today at Parliament Building in the City of Lilongwe.

The statement added that the purpose of the meeting is to prepare the Sixth Meeting of 49th Session which will commence from Monday, 18 July 2022 to August 12 2022.

Yesterday, some 22 DPP MPs obtained an injunction stopping George Chaponda from holding the position of Leader of Opposition.

The 22 MPs through their Lawyer Wopana Kita argue that the appointment of Chaponda was irregular, as they were not invited to vote to exercising their political right.
