Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is set to appoint a new vice president to replace Dr. Saulos Chilima. The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has advised the public that, according to sections 84 and 88 of the constitution, in conjunction with section 45 of the General Interpretation Act, President Chakwera must appoint a new vice president within seven days following the vice president’s death. When calculating these seven days, Sundays and public holidays are excluded.
In a letter signed by its Chairperson, Patrick Mpaka, the MLS indicated that by June 19, 2024, at the latest, President Chakwera is expected to have appointed a replacement for the late Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Chilima.
During a press briefing, Moses Kunkuyu assured the public that there is no need for concern, as President Chakwera respects the rule of law.
The nation now awaits the announcement of Malawi’s new vice president.
