Avantmalawi understands that Malawi Electoral Commission Chief Elections Officer, Sam Alfandika has been offered another job outside the country hence his resignation.
Some sources within the Commission have confirmed the development; saying a statement will soon be made on this.
Alfandika was under pressure in the disputed May 2019 presidential election as some citizens were calling for his resignation together with former MEC Chairperson Jane Ansah and other commissioners.
The resignation comes barely days after two of MEC’s commissioners went fired by the President of Malawi, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, following supreme Court Judgement in February 2020 which proved them incompetent to perform their duties.
Alfandika resignation letter was officially upheld by the Chairperson of MEC – Chifundo Kachale who officially writes:
“Furthermore, the Commission would like to officially inform the general
public and all our stake holders that, on Monday 26th April 2021, it received
a Notice of Resignation from The Chief Elections Officer Mr. Sam Alfandika,
who has already proceeded on his accrued annual leave pending the
effective operation of the resignation.
In the meantime, the Commission shall be meeting to discuss the relevant
modalities for filling the vacancy arising from this development, bearing in
mind the critical role of this office in the effective discharge of our business
at all levels.” ends
