BALLOT PAPERS FOR NEXT WEEK’S BY-ELECTIONS ARRIVE TOMMORROW

Ballot papers for Tuesday, next week’s by-elections are expected to arrive at Kamuzu International Airport tomorrow, Friday, 26 March.

According to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Director of Media and Public Relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa, the papers are expected to arrive on Emirates flight number EK9318 at 16.05hours.

“The ballot papers will be transported to the Constituency and Ward Nerve Centres the same day. They are expected to arrive at the Nerve Centres in the night of the same day or in the morning of Saturday, 27 March,” said Mwafulirwa.

He added that distribution of the ballot papers from the Nerve Centres to polling stations will start from 8.00 a.m. on Sunday 28 March.

“Contesting political parties and independent candidates are asked to send two representatives to witness the arrival and distribution of the ballot papers at the Nerve Centres,” he said.

The by-elections are being held in Nsanje North, Nsanje Central, and Chikwawa East constituencies following the High Court nullification of 2019 parliamentary elections on February 4, 2021.

While in Ntchisi North, Lilongwe Nsinja South, Karonga North West and Zomba 3 Changalume constituencies, and also from the two wards of Riviridzi in Balaka and Chitakale in Mulanje districts, the by-elections are being conducted following deaths of their respective office holders.
