Police in the Central West Region, in collaboration with ESCOM, have taken proactive measures to curb festive season crimes and vandalism.
This initiative is crucial, as past experiences have shown a surge in robbery cases targeting business people and vandalism of ESCOM wires during the holiday period, depriving communities their fundamental rights.
It is from this background that on December 20, 2024, ESCOM officials, Community Policing Officers from CWR and Kawale teamed-up, to take on board Faith leaders, Chiefs, and Business people in the fight against festive crimes and road accidents, led by Central West Regional Coordinator, Superintendent Byson Golden visited Senior Chief Tsabango’s headquarters.

Addressing the gathering, Golden urged chiefs to consider having door keepers in their respective villages to combat crime at grass roots. He therefore advised them to revamp community policing structures.
Furthermore, police tackled issues of mob justice, robbery cases targeting Kabaza operators, defilement and road accidents.
Traffic Inspector Madaliso Mwandira bemoaned the increased fatalities of Kabaza operators, he therefore took advantage of their presence to school them on traffic regulations and further advised them to embrace defensive driving skills.
“When using the road you can be innocent but you can still lose your life if the other road user is reckless,so be observant and have a defensive mindset on the road” Said Mwandira.
Dr Alex Chapondera, Central west Regional Executive Chair (REC) stressed on the collaborative approach between police and communities in the fight against crime, vandalism during festive season and beyond which is a catalyst to development.
Representing ESCOM, the Regional Security Operations Officer, Laban Makalani urged communities to join hands in the fight against corruption and vandalism of company equipment. He advised the gathering to report such cases to police or directly to ESCOM using the hotline number 847 , promising of discretion and an attached reward for any report.
Senior Group Village Chiudzira representing Senior Chief Tsabango expressed his profound gratitude for the timely visit, promising to activate the same to their subordinates.
