Katema community in Mangochi is one step closer to regaining police services following a stakeholder engagement meeting held on December 8, 2025 at Namisi TDC led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Owen Maganga, officer-in-charge for Mangochi Police Station.
Katema Police Unit was closed in March , 2025 after irate villagers torched the structure during a disagreement with officers. Since then, traditional leaders and community members have been appealing for the return of the unit, citing a rise in security threats in the area.
In his remarks, DCP Maganga reminded community members that they have the responsibility to take the lead in constructing new police structures through the Community Development Fund (CDF). He urged Katema residents to prioritise rebuilding the police unit.

“The police is ready to redeploy officers to Katema once the structure is in place. Our job is to offer security services, not to construct buildings,” said Maganga. He further assured stakeholders that, in the meantime, police officers will be dispatched for rural patrols every market day to enhance security while awaiting reconstruction.
The ward councillor for the area, Daudi Bata commended Maganga and the entire police leadership for the commitment shown. He said he will engage the area’s Member of Parliament and the District Commissioner’s office to ensure that the project is given priority, emphasising that community members are in desperate need of restored police services.
Sub Traditional Authority (STA) Mponda-Mponda, who also attended the meeting, expressed gratitude to the police for engaging the community despite the unfortunate incident that led to the closure of the unit.
He assured the police of the traditional leadership’s full support and commitment towards restoring peace, order, and a strong working relationship between the police and the community.
Maganga also visited Chilipa Police Unit on a familiarisation tour, where he interacted with officers under his command, traditional leaders, and community members.
