The Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) officially launched the 2025 Simso NRFA Premier League on Sunday, 15th June, at Luwinga Technical Centre in Mzuzu, marking the beginning of another season of regional football action.

The launch featured an entertaining opening match between Lube Masters FC and Embangweni United FC, attracting a large crowd of passionate football fans. The energy around the stadium reflected the community’s enthusiasm for the return of top-tier regional football.

Embangweni United FC emerged victorious in the opening fixture, securing a 2-1 win over Lube Masters FC. The win gave them an early advantage on the league table and set the tone for what promises to be a competitive season.

During the event, NRFA Chairperson Masiya Nyasulu announced that the league is on the verge of securing a new sponsorship deal. He said the agreement is nearly finalized and is expected to enhance the league’s standard and competitiveness.

“We are 99 percent done with the paperwork,” said Nyasulu. “In the next two weeks, we will unveil the new sponsor of the league. This partnership will bring in a new era of stiff competition.”

The update follows the expiration of a one-year sponsorship contract with Mzuzu 12, which had supported the league previously. Currently, Simso remains as a co-sponsor, keeping the league afloat during the transition.

The event was attended by Dr. Lameck Zetu Khonje, the Second Vice President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), who served as the guest of honour. He commended the teams for their display of skill and discipline during the launch match.

Dr. Khonje described the opening performance as “inspiring,” adding that if such quality is maintained throughout the season, northern region teams will continue to grow stronger and become competitive on the national stage.
