Vinjeru Ngwira

Mzuzu residents are being cautioned to stay vigilant amidst continuous and persistent rainfall, raising concerns about potential flooding and structural damage to homes. Our reporter recently surveyed disaster-prone regions including Masasa, Sausberyline, Luwinga, and Mzilawayingwe, uncovering the immediate threat of house collapses if the precipitation continues. The visit highlighted the vulnerability of certain residences to the relentless downpour.

This situation mirrors the events of the previous year when unrelenting rains led to the displacement of numerous residents in Mzuzu. In particular, Luwinga and Masasa townships bore the brunt of house collapses, rendering several people homeless. The recurrence of such weather patterns underscores the urgency for residents to take precautions and for authorities to implement measures that mitigate the impact of the persistent rains on the community’s safety and well-being.
