MRA POUNCES ON MAPETO OFFICIALS

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has arrested five officials from Mapeto (DWSM) Limited on allegation of tax evasion.

Mapeto ( DWSM) is said to have defrauded the Malawi Government of revenue amounting to MK10.8 billion.

The officials include Faizal Gaffar Latif (Director), Mohamed Gaffar (Managing Director), Abdul Rashid Bakali (Financial Controller), Yaseen Muhammad (Procurement Manager) and Martin Chapasi Mpata (General Manager).

MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Steve Kapoloma, told MBC that on April 7, 2021, the tax collecting body obtained a search warrant and managed to apprehend four officials from the company on Friday May 21, 2021, and on Sunday, May 23, 2021, director for the company, Faizal Gaffar Latif handed himself to Msonkho House.

‘’The offences committed are contrary to the provisions of the Customs and Excise Act, Taxation Act and Value Added Tax.

‘’The Malawi Revenue Authority has been examining documents which were seized at the business premises of Mapeto (DWSM) Limited for six weeks,’’ said Kapoloma.

Currently, the suspects are being kept at Blantyre Police Station while waiting for court proceedings.
