A 25-year-old woman, Spiwe Kaiyatsa, is in police custody at Kawale for allegedly attempting to kill her 7-months old baby, by poisoning her with some chemicals (name withheld) in Area 38, Lilongwe.
Report filed at Kawale Police indicates that the suspect stays in Area 38, Lilongwe dumping site (mtaya) and on March 25, 2026 at around 20:30 hours it is suspected that she went out leaving the child in custody of house maid and grand mother.
The woman came back later the same night when the child was sleeping with her grandmother and she took the child to her room, but after few minutes, the child started coughing unceasingly which caught the attention of grand mother and maid, who took the victim to bathroom where she started vomiting, and they further discovered that the victim was smelling drugs which made them to search the suspect and discovered that she had a bottle of drugs.
This gave them a clue that the child has been poisoned and they immediately rushed to Bwaila Hospital where they were refered to Kamuzu Central Hospital with a guarantee of survival.
The matter was later reported to police by the maid which led to the arrest of the suspect on March 26, 2026.
The suspect, Sphiwe Kaiyatsa who hails from Chilobwe Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nsomba in Blantyre, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of attempted murder.
