State Vice President Michael Usi has announced that he will not attend UTM’s elective convention scheduled for November 17, 2024, in Mzuzu.
Usi, who is also the current president of UTM, stated that he wishes to distance himself from what he sees as unconstitutional actions taken by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) in preparation for the convention. Despite his efforts to counsel the NEC, he claims they have moved forward with decisions he considers unlawful.
“As State Vice President, I cannot be part of a process that involves serious breaches of the party’s constitution,” Usi said. “Being involved would imply my complicity, and if I am seen as complicit in violating a party constitution, how can people trust me to uphold the national Constitution?”
Usi highlighted specific issues, including alleged unauthorized changes to the party’s constitution, alterations to the delegate structure for the convention, and moving forward with the convention before holding required lower-level elections.
“For these reasons, I have not submitted my nomination papers. I have no time for needless conflicts,” he concluded.
