MHRC PRESENTS REPORT ON SEXUAL HARRASSMENT

MALAWI Human Rights Commission (MHRC) is set to present a report on Sexual Harassment Case report and shooting of a Polytechnic student Blessings Nyondo. The function, being attended by MHRC Commissioners and various invited guest, has just started in Blantyre.

In her opening remarks, Malawi Human Rights Commission executive secretary Habiba Osman, says the reports are not an end as there are recommendations that have been made and need to be implemented.

Osman has described the release of the reports as momentous for the commission, adding that the reports have been released in Blantyre as investigations were conducted in Blantyre.

Meanwhile, commissioner Baldwin Chiyamwaka is expected to present the first report on investigations into the death of Polytechnic student, Blessings Nyondo.

: The Malawi Human Rights Commission has made the following recommendations over the shooting of Blessings Nyondo, a Polytechnic student in December last year.

Inspector General of Police should institute probe into the shooting.

Inspector General of Police should commence criminal investigations of MBC Guard, identified as Mr Chanunkha who shot Nyondo.

Inspector General of Police should institute an investigation into the conduct of a police officer identified as Inspector Nambazo who was at the scene on 31st December 2020.

Qech should seize conducting private postmortem.

The Ministry of Justice should review use of fire arms.

The Inspector General should probe the conduct of police officers.

The family members of the deceased may seek compensation from the state.

MBC Director General should see to it that there are routine human rights lessons and use of security gadgets.
