In a bid to reduce road accidents in the lake shore district, Mangochi Police Station has embarked on an intensive traffic checks where 116 motorists and 12 motorcycles have been fined for violating road traffic act.
The initiative was rolled out on September 1, 2021 at Arthur Peter Mutharika, Bakli Muluzi, Monkey-Bay and Makanjira roads.
The team which jointly comprised of traffic, general duties and Mobile Police officers was led by the Station Traffic Officer, Assistant Superintendent Raphael Kalulu.
The team manned the places to ensure that road users are following road safety measures and targeted motorists and motorcyclists since most of them are losing their lives through road accidents.
Among the offences the motorists and motorcyclists were fined are uninsured motor vehicle, operating without road service permit, exceeding carrying capacity, unregistered motor vehicles, driving without licence, over speeding and riding without crush helmet.
According to statistics, during the month of August 2020 the Station recorded 20 road accidents and seven people lost their lives while the same period this year eight road accidents have been recorded and two people reported dead.
The Station will continue with the initiative until road users are complying with the road traffic regulations on the roads of the district.
