Man jailed 6½ years IHL for burglary

The Mangochi First Grade Magistrate’s court on April 23, 2024 convicted and sentenced Stanley Frank, 32, to six and half years imprisonment with hard labour for the offences of burglary and theft respectively.

The court heard through Prosecutor Sub Inspector Jack Thaulo that on April 6, 2024 the convict broke into the building of Dailes Missi, 51, and stole various items that includes TV screen, Generator, Two blankets, Decoder and a DVD all valued at K245,000 while the complainant was away for a holiday.

The incident was reported to police where he was recorded statement and police actions were taken which led to the arrest of the convict and all stolen items were recovered.

Appearing in court, the convict pleaded not guilty and the state brought 3 witnesses who proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

In mitigation, the convict asked for court’s leniency saying he looks after his family.

But in his submission, the state through Sub Inspector Jack Thaulo made it visible that his act is dangerous and can hinder development of the nation hence pleaded for a stiffer punishment.

Passing sentence, Magistrate Roy Kakutu concluded with the state that the convict’s behaviour is a disgrace and is a sign of laziness.

He therefore sentenced Frank to six and half years for burglary and 10 months for theft and added that the sentence should act as a deterrent to other would be offenders. All sentences to run concurrently.

Frank comes from Chowe village in the area Traditional Authority Chowe in Mangochi district.
