Man jailed 10 years (IHL) over Lilongwe water board meter vandalism .

The Lilongwe First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced Kondwani Willy Banda, 45, to serve a jail term of 124 months imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for stealing water board meters at Kamuzu Barracks camp lines.

The court heard through prosecutor Inspector Fancy Sichali of Kawale Police Station that in the month of october, 2023 Kondwani Willy Banda stole 100 meters MTL Cable within Kamuzu barracks lines and in between June 16-22 ,2024 he went again and stole 10 water board meters, acting on this police operation led to his the arrest.

Appearing in court, the convict pleaded guilty to all the 10 charges leveled against him.

In his submission, Sichali asked the court to grant a custodial sentence citing that such cases are on the rise and consider the over head costs incured by the company since there is no recovery made and to serve as a lesson to other would -be offenders.

Magistrate Amalan Phiri concurred with the state’s submission and stressed the need to remove people of such calibre from society.

He therefore ordered the convict to serve a jail term of 52 months for stealing MTL cables and 36 months for remaining counts each and in total 124 months which is equivalent to 10 years and 3 months.

Banda hails from Kanyangala Matola Village, Traditional Authority Msamala in Balaka district.
